Daniel O'Donnell leads tributes following death of popular Irish DJ in Luton | The Irish Post

Tributes have poured in following the passing of beloved Irish DJ Jim Carway, a stalwart of the Irish community in Luton, who died on February 2 at the age of 77 after a short illness.

Described as a “proud Luton Irish man” with family roots in County Sligo, Carway was a familiar and much-loved voice on local radio for decades. Before retiring last year, he spent 17 years with Diverse FM, where he hosted the Luton Irish Live show. He had previously worked with Chiltern Radio and was known for his unwavering support of Irish and country music, regularly promoting emerging artists long before they reached wider audiences.

For more than 25 years, Carway was deeply involved in the annual Luton St Patrick’s Festival and Parade, organized by the Luton Irish Forum (LIF). In recent years, he served as host for the main stage celebrations, becoming a central figure in the community’s biggest annual gathering. One of his final appearances was as DJ for LIF’s Autumn Social in 2025 — a fitting farewell to a man who dedicated so much of his life to bringing people together through music.

LIF CEO Noelette Hanlon described the news as “very sad” for the Luton Irish community. She praised Carway’s passion for Irish music and noted how he introduced local audiences to artists such as Nathan Carter. “Jim was an example of how you should make the most of your life,” she said, adding that the organization would honor his memory during this year’s St Patrick’s Parade.

Among those paying tribute was Donegal-born star Daniel O’Donnell, who expressed shock and deep sadness at the news. O’Donnell said he had known Carway for many years and described him as a respected radio presenter and steadfast supporter of Irish singers and musicians. “It was always a pleasure to be in his company,” he shared.

Nathan Carter also offered heartfelt condolences, calling Carway “a gentleman and a good friend for over 15 years.”

Jim Carway is survived by his partner Maureen, along with extended family and many friends whose lives he touched through music, community spirit, and kindness.

Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced.
